Read MoreThe Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore, is a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), established in 1950. With over seven decades of pioneering research, CFTRI has been instrumental in shaping India's food processing industry and enhancing global food security.
Our institute is spread across a 140-acre campus in the heart of Mysore, featuring state-of-the-art laboratories, pilot plants, and testing facilities. We employ over 400 scientific staff and 200 support personnel dedicated to advancing food science.
CFTRI's research focuses on developing sustainable food processing technologies, enhancing nutritional quality, ensuring food safety, and reducing post-harvest losses. We work closely with industry partners, government agencies, and international organizations to translate research into practical solutions.
To generate innovative knowledge and technologies in food science and technology that ensure safe, nutritious, and affordable food for all, while promoting sustainable practices and supporting the food industry.
CFTRI established as the first food research institute in India under the CSIR umbrella. Initial focus on solving post-independence food shortages.
Pioneered the development of baby food formulations to address malnutrition. Established first pilot plant for protein-rich foods.
Launched Food Safety and Standards Division. Developed India's first comprehensive manual on food safety protocols.
International recognition for developing intermediate moisture foods for space programs. Collaboration with ISRO begins.
Designated as WHO Collaborating Centre for Food Safety. Expanded campus with new biotechnology wing.
Launched "Food for Future" initiative focusing on sustainable packaging, alternative proteins, and AI-driven food processing.
Our multidisciplinary research spans across traditional food processing to cutting-edge food biotechnology.
Developing innovative thermal and non-thermal processing technologies to extend shelf life while retaining nutritional quality. Research includes high-pressure processing, pulsed electric field, and advanced drying techniques. Current projects focus on reducing energy consumption by 40% in fruit processing.
Advanced analytical methods for detection of contaminants, pathogens, and adulterants. Development of rapid testing kits for on-site food safety assessment. Implementation of blockchain for food traceability. Accredited testing laboratory serving over 500 food businesses annually.
Enzyme engineering for food applications, fermentation technology, and development of probiotics. Research on alternative proteins including plant-based and cultivated meat. Strain development for enhanced production of food-grade enzymes and bioactive compounds.
Human clinical trials to validate health claims of functional foods. Development of therapeutic foods for management of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and malnutrition. Collaboration with medical institutions across India.
